Incredible Tortillas All The Way From Kansas
At the end of last year, I kept seeing fellow foodie friends posting about Caramelo tortillas on Instagram. At first, I didn't think much of it. Living in LA, there are many tortillas options throughout the city, and it seemed a little insane to be ordering them from Lawrence, Kansas. I mean, how good could this tortilla be?!? Finally, in December, as a little Christmas present to myself, I decided to order some so I could see what all the hype was about. And then, the bad news. It would be an estimated five weeks before they were even going to arrive. I ordered one of each flavor: a duck fat, a pork fat, and an avocado oil. Then, I forgot about it until this week when they finally arrived.
I'm happy to report it was actually worth the wait, as they are truly spectacular. I now understand what everyone has been talking about. These Sonoran-style flour tortillas are thin, chewy, and perfectly delicate. The kind of tortilla you can happily eat with just a little butter and sea salt on top. We've already devoured half of them, and I can't believe I'll have to wait another five weeks to get my fix once they are all gone. My best advice is to order a bunch and store them in the freezer. At least, that is what I will be doing.
